Fact Friday: Skin Care Systems

iStock_000018333816Small-CosmeticFoilPacketIf you wander down the aisles at your local beauty supply or drugstore, you are bound to see hundreds of different skin care products. You want to try many of them, mesmerized by the different benefits that the packaging claims. You think that if you purchase one product from each of the lines you are dying to try, you will get all the benefits from each of those pretty little bottles. You see that the back of the packaging recommends that the products work best if followed by a few other products from their line, but, as usual, you ignore it. Next time you purchase skin care products, instead of shrugging off the recommendation as a marketing gimmick, you should take the suggestion of a system more seriously.

Why is a system important?

When it comes to skin care, it is a common misconception that you can treat your face like you treat your hands. Cleansing and moisturizing may work well for your hands, but the skin on your face requires more attention. Although these two steps are extremely important, you are only affecting the outer layers of dead skin cells. Particularly with facial skin care, you want to focus on boosting the skin cycle, not just working on the surface layers of skin. To make a change to your live skin for improved and truly healthy skin, you will need to work on a four-step system: resurface and renew, treat and prevent, nourish and hydrate, protect and defend. In this system, it is also important to note the pH of your products. Products are formulated to be used in an order that allows for maximum absorption of the product for the most dramatic improvement to the skin.

Skin Care SystemsUsing individual products from different systems runs the risk of different pHs negating or minimizing the results of products. Sound familiar? Many people who are unsatisfied with the effectiveness of their products may be unintentionally sabotaging their results. Even if you get the desired results, it may take much longer, resulting in abandoning the product because it “takes too long.”

Systems will be able to target multiple aspects of specific skin conditions, while creating a complete and balanced system without any guesswork on your part. Experts have devised which products are best utilized at night and which are better for mornings, depending on purpose, strength, pH, ability to wear under makeup, and other factors. So shake off that feeling of skepticism that companies are just trying to trick you into buying more, and trust the experts. Skin care systems are vital to ensuring that you are getting the highest potential out of your products and maximum benefits for your skin.
