Fresh Food and a Feast

20131007_143033_resizedAlthough many of us have assumed a correlation between nutrition and cosmetic appearance, in the past, true clinical studies to support this conclusion have been virtually non-existent. Recently however, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition actually published clinical results with studies establishing direct connects between proper nutrition and signs of aging. Regardless of sex, age, race, or health condition, people with proper levels of Vitamin C present in the skin had less wrinkles than those without proper levels of Vitamin C. People who had diets high in carbohydrates had advanced signs of aging as well as skin atrophy. As I’ve looked at how to enhance the healthy eating rituals in my family for better health and skin beauty, all roads lead back to eating what comes directly from the earth.

Fresh produce is not only healthier for you but it also tastes amazing without a lot of preparation. I was never a huge tomato fan until we started growing our own. There is so much flavor and texture to a fresh tomato. They are easy to grow, don’t take much space or maintenance. I have to say that I was resistant to the garden idea because I thought it would take too much time, maintenance and patience. Now I know it is easier and cheaper than going to the grocery store. Watch out though, because your flavor palate will be forever changed. It is tough to eat a processed vegetable once you get used to fresh. Every family should have access to fresh food. It costs about the same as McDonald’s and eating well has the added benefit of improving brain function and confidence.

20131007_133302_resized I got a chance to check in on the progress of the planting of the new learning garden at the New Children’s Museum, a place where parents and their children can learn how to plant and grow fresh food regardless of where you live. Plants can thrive in creative spaces! These pictures show abandoned toilets being used as planters. Discarded shoe holders that attach to doors or egg cartons can be used for microgreens and herbs. As we prepare for the unveiling of FEAST! The Art of Playing with your Food this weekend, I am reminded how blessed we are to have access to fresh water, food and education to stay healthy and live well. It is so easy to take it all for granted. There is something about putting your hands in the soil that allows you to reconnect with the earth and all of life that surrounds you. It makes you want to reconnect with others and share the goodness of what you have, regardless of how much or how little.
