Turmeric: An ancient superfood in modern skin care

istock_000005818104_large-turmericfieldsWith the attention being paid to turmeric, it may seem the spice recently became a trusted ingredient for health, well-being and beauty. In reality, turmeric has a long, rich history. Used in India and the Middle East for thousands of years, turmeric is now one of the most highly-prized spices in the world.

The Skin Authority journey with turmeric started a few years ago when the brand’s Medical Director Dr. Munish Batra shared the medicinal benefits of the spice with our team. As is common in the Indian Culture, shortly before Dr. Batra was married, his beautiful bride was painted in a paste of turmeric from head to toe. This ritual was done as a way to make her skin flawless.

We saw the results on the wedding day and, with our interest spurred, our team started testing turmeric to see how it could benefit the skin. We discovered turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, is anti-inflammatory, and is anti-septic. Turmeric helps manage oil secretion, clears blemishes, is a natural exfoliator, and aids in lessening the appearance of wrinkles. Turmeric also protects against UV damage.

One of the most interesting things we learned is the brightening effect of turmeric is caused by curcumin, the primary pharmacological agent in turmeric. Curcumin works to block the activation of proteins that increase melanin, which makes it such a fantastic complexion brightener. Curcumin contains proven anti-inflammatory properties that don’t produce typical toxic effects such as ulcer formation, internal bleeding, and a lowered white blood cell count. The trick was to extract curcumin from the turmeric root in a form that can be concentrated and delivered topically to the skin. Once this was accomplished, we had the essence of a powerful, modern skin care product based on ancient wisdom and centuries of proven results.

We call turmeric a multi-purpose super-ingredient. And, the benefits are not limited to the skin! Turmeric’s antioxidants and proteins rejuvenate scalp health, reduce itchiness, and control dandruff and hair loss.

Topically, turmeric pairs well with blueberries, quinoa, avocado and probiotics, all of which are in the new Skin Authority Beauty Infusion™ Collection. The Beauty Infusions, of which there are four, allow you to mix and match to compound the greatness of the healing powers of the natural ingredients. The Beauty Infusion™ for Brightening contains turmeric and blueberry – the power couple when it comes to brightening!
